Our digital marketing isn't working...oh my!
I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.
Something much bigger is happening. The way people discover information online is changing ... and B2B industrial companies need to understand what that means.
For years, digital marketing followed a predictable path.
Someone searched Google. They saw your listing. They clicked. They visited your website. Maybe they filled out a form or contacted sales.
That journey isn't disappearing, but it is changing rapidly.
Google increasingly provides answers directly in search results. AI platforms can research a topic, compare alternatives and summarize information without requiring the buyer to visit every source used to develop the answer.
LinkedIn has changed too. Organic reach isn't what it once was.
So you can be creating useful content and building market visibility while traditional metrics like clicks and traffic tell you things are getting worse.
That's a problem if you're measuring today's buyer with yesterday's scoreboard.
Industrial buyers haven't stopped researching.
They're searching. They're reading. They're comparing. Increasingly, they're asking AI.
Engineers, plant managers and procurement people can investigate suppliers long before anyone fills out a form or talks to your salesperson.
The important question isn't simply:
"How many people clicked on our website?"
A better question is:
"When buyers ... and AI ... look for expertise in our niche, do they find us?"
That's a very different marketing objective.
Most industrial companies have decades of valuable expertise trapped inside their organizations.
Engineers solve difficult application problems. Salespeople answer customer questions. Technicians troubleshoot equipment. Leadership sees market changes long before outsiders do.
Historically, much of that knowledge never became marketing content.
AI changes the economics of capturing and amplifying that expertise.
And here's where I think the real opportunity exists.
Your competitors probably have the same bandwidth problem you do.
The industrial company that consistently turns genuine expertise into useful, discoverable content can become associated with the problems it solves.
Visibility builds familiarity.
Familiarity builds trust.
Trust builds authority.
I'm not suggesting website traffic, rankings, leads or LinkedIn engagement no longer matter. They absolutely do.
But they aren't the whole scoreboard anymore.
Industrial companies need to think beyond generating the next click and start building something competitors can't easily duplicate.
Authority.
When your expertise consistently appears where buyers research problems ... whether that's Google, AI, LinkedIn, technical content, video or your website ... you're building competitive infrastructure.
I call that your Digital Moat™.
Your competitors can buy the same software. They can redesign their website. They can subscribe to the same AI tools.
What they can't instantly replicate is years of expertise systematically turned into market authority.
Don't panic because clicks are changing.
Make sure your expertise is becoming impossible to ignore.
