Which material is best for this application? What causes this component to fail? What should I look for in a supplier? Who really knows this niche?

For decades, buyers took those questions to salespeople, distributors, trade publications, Google and trusted colleagues.

Now they are also asking AI.

According to the [2026 State of Marketing to Engineers](https://www.trewmarketing.com/state-of-marketing-to-engineers-research-report) report, 69% of technical buyers use generative AI at least occasionally to help evaluate vendors or research products and services. At the same time, 62% of the technical buying process happens online before buyers engage with sales.

That creates an important question for industrial companies:

When AI answers questions about your industry ... where are those answers coming from?

And is your company's expertise part of the conversation?

## **How Do LLMs Work? The Simple Version**

Large language models, or LLMs, are AI systems trained on enormous amounts of text. During training, they learn patterns and relationships in language. Given a prompt, the model generates a response based on those learned patterns.

That's the ridiculously simplified explanation.

There's another wrinkle that matters to marketers. Some AI systems can also retrieve current information from the web or other connected sources when answering questions. In those situations, the system isn't relying solely on what it learned during training. It may find current information, synthesize it and sometimes provide citations. Maybe from your B2B?

So, there are two concepts worth separating.

What an LLM learned during training is one thing.

What an AI-powered answer engine can find today is another.

The technology is complicated. The business implication isn't.

AI needs information to work with.

Your brand's information.

## **AI Can't Read Your Engineer's Mind**

Industrial companies have an interesting problem.

Your engineer may have spent 25 years solving a specific manufacturing problem. Your sales manager may know exactly why one application succeeds and another fails.

That expertise has tremendous value.

But if it lives inside people's heads, email chains and sales conversations, it is largely invisible to the outside world.

Your company knows it.

The Internet doesn't necessarily know it.

And AI can't magically extract expertise that has never been made available.

This is central to the [Digital Moat™ concept](https://www.thereppgroup.com/what-is-the-digital-moat-framework). Most industrial companies don't have an expertise problem. They have a visibility and bandwidth problem. Their people know a tremendous amount, but much of that knowledge has never been captured, structured and consistently shared with the market.

## **Where Are AI's Answers Coming From?**

Depending on the AI system and question, an answer may be influenced by information available across company websites, technical articles, product documentation, trade publications, research papers, FAQs, videos, forums and other accessible sources.

Here's the important part.

AI doesn't require your company to participate before answering a question about your industry.

If you've published little useful information on a subject, the AI can still provide an answer.

It just may not have much from you to work with.

Imagine your company has been solving a specialized application problem for 40 years. Your engineers know more about it than almost anyone in the market.

But online, you have three generic product pages and a six-year-old press release.

Meanwhile, a competitor publishes detailed technical articles, application guides, FAQs and expert commentary answering the exact questions buyers ask.

Which company has created more digital evidence of expertise?

You can possess tremendous expertise and still be nearly invisible.

## **Don't Confuse AI Visibility With AI-Generated Content**

The answer isn't firing up ChatGPT and publishing 100 generic articles a month.

Please don't.

AI is an amplifier. Feed it generic thinking and you can produce generic content at breathtaking speed. Congratulations ... you have invented a faster way to become boring.

The real opportunity is using AI to amplify genuine human expertise.

The 2026 State of Marketing to Engineers report found that 66% of respondents considered engineering experts at vendor companies very or extremely trustworthy as authors of technical content. Only 10% gave generative AI tools that same level of trust.

Your engineers and company expertise are the asset.

AI is the leverage.

The goal isn't to replace the people who know your business. It's to make what they know easier to capture, organize, publish and discover.

## **AI Hasn't Killed Search Either**

Don't assume everyone has abandoned Google for ChatGPT.

They haven't.

The same 2026 study found 77% of technical buyers use traditional search engines more often when looking for information. Eight percent favored generative AI platforms, while 16% use both equally.

So don't think SEO versus AI.

Think visibility.

Can buyers find useful evidence of your expertise wherever they research?

Can search engines understand what your company knows?

Can search engines understand what makes your industrial brand different ... and the best one for the "short list".

Can AI systems find credible information associated with your expertise?

When buyers dig deeper, is there something worth finding?

## **Turn Expertise Into Digital Evidence**

For years, many industrial websites have essentially been digital catalogs.

Products. Capabilities. Industries served. About us. Contact us.

Necessary? Absolutely.

Enough? Increasingly, no.

If buyers are asking detailed questions before contacting sales, your digital presence should answer those questions.

What mistakes do customers commonly make? How do engineers evaluate competing approaches? What variables affect performance? What should buyers understand before requesting a quote?

What have your people learned after thousands of applications?

That's where expertise becomes content.

And content becomes digital evidence of what your company actually knows.

The Repp Group's narrative points to the opportunity: small to mid-size industrial companies often possess decades of hard-earned expertise that remains largely invisible, while competitors frequently suffer from the same weakness.

## **That's How You Start Building a Digital Moat™**

One useful article isn't a moat.

Neither are ten AI-generated blog posts.

Authority is built by consistently demonstrating useful expertise around the problems, applications and questions that matter in your niche.

Competitors can redesign their website.

They can buy the same software.

They can subscribe to the same AI tools.

They cannot instantly recreate years of expertise that has been systematically captured, organized and made visible.

So start with the questions your buyers already ask. Capture the answers from sales, engineering, customer service and leadership. Turn those answers into useful articles, FAQs, technical guides, videos and application content.

Make it accurate. Make it specific. Put real expertise behind it.

Because whether the buyer starts with Google, ChatGPT, another AI platform or your website, the objective is increasingly the same:

Make sure your expertise can be found.

Your buyers are asking AI questions about your industry right now.

AI is going to give them an answer.

The question is whether your company's expertise has earned its way into the conversation.
