There’s nothing wrong with those statements. The problem is that nearly every competitor makes them.

If you’re an industrial executive trying to differentiate your company, that should concern you. Your people may possess decades of technical knowledge, solve difficult customer problems, and make decisions that save customers considerable time and expense. Yet your marketing may make you sound remarkably similar to everyone else.

The best way to demonstrate industrial expertise isn't to tell buyers how good you are. It's to show them how your people think when the answer isn't obvious.

## **Buyers Want Evidence, Not Adjectives**

Industrial buyers have heard every variation of the quality-and-service promise. They know those attributes matter, but they also know a supplier's claims don't establish whether that supplier can solve their particular problem.

Consider two manufacturers competing for the same business.

One says, "We provide innovative solutions backed by unmatched technical expertise."

The other explains how its engineers evaluate material selection when a component must withstand repeated exposure to heat, vibration, and abrasive conditions. It describes the tradeoffs between durability, cost, and manufacturability.

Which company gives a prospective buyer more reason to believe it knows what it's doing?

The second company isn't simply claiming expertise. It's demonstrating the judgment behind its decisions.

That's a meaningful distinction.

## **The Hard Decisions Reveal Your Real Value**

In industrial markets, expertise often becomes most valuable when the standard answer doesn't work.

A customer needs a component that performs reliably under unusual operating conditions. An OEM must decide whether a standard part will meet performance requirements or whether customization is justified. A production team must balance tighter tolerances against manufacturing cost and delivery expectations.

These situations require more than product knowledge. They require experience, sound judgment, and an understanding of consequences.

Your buyers want to know whether your company can navigate those decisions.

A useful article might explain why a particular material performs better in one application but creates unnecessary expense in another. Another could describe the circumstances under which a custom-engineered solution makes sense ... and when it doesn't.

That last point matters. A company willing to explain when its more expensive solution isn't necessary demonstrates something buyers value: trustworthy judgment.

## **Your Best Marketing Material May Already Exist**

Most industrial companies don't have an expertise problem. They have an expertise visibility problem.

Your engineers, technical salespeople, application specialists, and production leaders answer difficult questions every week. They explain tradeoffs, diagnose failures, recommend alternatives, and help customers avoid mistakes.

Unfortunately, much of that knowledge disappears into phone calls, emails, meetings, and individual relationships.

The opportunity is to capture those conversations and turn them into useful information prospective buyers can discover.

Start by asking your technical and sales teams what questions require the most explanation. Which applications regularly create confusion? What mistakes do customers make before contacting you? Where does your company see problems that less experienced suppliers might overlook?

Those answers are potential articles, application guides, technical explanations, videos, and sales resources.

You don't need to reveal proprietary processes or confidential customer information. You need to explain the thinking that makes your company valuable.

## **Specificity Builds Credibility**

A convincing example doesn't require a dramatic success story or a long technical report. It needs enough detail to help a buyer understand the problem and your approach.

Explain the operating conditions. Identify the decision that needed to be made. Describe the options considered and why certain alternatives were rejected. Discuss the tradeoffs and the reasoning behind the recommendation.

Where you have verified results and permission to share them, include those too.

The objective isn't to impress buyers with complexity. It's to help them recognize that your company understands challenges like theirs.

The 2026 State of Marketing to Engineers report reinforces the value of credible technical voices. In that survey, 66% of respondents rated engineering experts at vendor companies as very or extremely trustworthy content authors.

Your technical people are not just resources for delivering products. Their knowledge can help establish confidence long before a buyer contacts sales.

## **Make Expertise Part of Your Competitive Strategy**

This is a leadership issue, not simply a marketing assignment.

If your company's strongest competitive advantage is the knowledge inside your employees' heads, leaving that knowledge invisible limits its value.

Marketing cannot manufacture technical credibility. But it can work with your people to make that credibility visible, understandable, and useful.

Start with one difficult customer problem your company knows how to solve. Have the people closest to that problem explain how they evaluate it. Turn their thinking into something a prospective buyer can learn from.

Then do it again.

Over time, you're not just producing content. You're building a body of evidence that helps buyers understand why your company deserves consideration.

Your competitors can claim quality and service just as easily as you can.

They can't as easily duplicate the experience, judgment, and problem-solving knowledge your people have developed.

The question is whether your market can see the difference.
